Cosmetic Sclerotherapy
Asclera®
What is Cosmetic Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment of spider veins by injecting a chemical solution directly into the vein. Dr. McKee uses Asclera®, a FDA approved treatment, for two types of unwanted veins in the lower extremity:
-
Uncomplicated spider veins (very small varicose veins ≤ 1 mm in diameter)
-
Uncomplicated small varicose veins (1 to 3 mm in diameter) known as reticular veins.
Asclera® works by chemically sealing the blood vessels shut and making them not visible.
Not everyone is a candidate for sclerotherapy as larger veins need more invasive treatments. A consultation with Dr. McKee is important to see if you are a good candidate for cosmetic sclerotherapy.
Common Sclerotherapy FAQs
Will my spider veins disppear after 1 tratment?
No, you will typically need more than 1 treatment of sclerotherapy depending on how severe and how many spider veins you have. You will typically have visits every 2-3 weeks.
Will the treatment hurt?
We use a very small needle (about the size of a insulin needle) to inject the chemical. It is virtually painless but care will be taken if pain is not tolerated.
What are the risks of sclerotherapy?
Injection site reactions are typically side effects of sclerotherapy and resolve within a few hours to weeks. This includes: bruising, itching, swelling, or discoloration of the skin.
Who should not get sclerotherapy?
Do not get sclerotherapy if you have a known allergy to polidocanol, have an acute vein or blood clotting disease, are breast feeding or pregnant. Schedule your consultation with Dr. McKee to see if you are a good candidate for cosmetic sclerotherapy.
